Reduce Your Healthcare Costs

So when you are not working, you eventually run out of Cobra or money to pay for insurance. That makes it time to make sure you pay less for your healthcare. My doctor offers flat rate, same day cash office visits at $50 and many do have some kind of provision for that cash at time of visit if you explain there is no insurance.

Many doctors and dentists understand if you tell them about a financial crunch and will let you pay over time. Perhaps even with no interest but if they have a credit company involved, interest may be your only options if you want those braces, eye surgery or some other expensive procedure that is currently out of reach.

Barter a service you can provide. What do you do on a professional level? Accounting - offer to do his taxes if that is in your realm, photography, make him (or her) a sweater, offer to cook and deliver dinners one night a week for a month (or two). Be creative. What can you offer that they would like but don't have time or the ability to do for themselves?

Another alternative is the Free Clinic, but find out what you are getting into before it's too late.
  • Do you have to have an appointment?
  • What is the criteria for coming there? Is it based on income or just lack of insurance?
  • Will you always be seen if you go to a first come, first served clinic?
  • How much time is involved? Will it fit into your schedule?
  • Can you get prescriptions filled at low or no cost?
  • Can they help with a Prescription Assistance Programs from the manufacturer?
  • Can they do blood work or help with the cost at another facility?
  • Do they have dentists, chiropractors, or OB/GYNs available?
  • Can you volunteer instead of a donation?
Most states have dentals schools where students will work on your mouth under the supervision of their Professors who are full fledged Dentists and Orthodontists. Is there a dental school nearby?
